National Energy Efficiency and Conservation Authority
National Energy Conservation Centre (ENERCON) has now been transformed into National Energy Efficiency & Conservation Authority (NEECA).In order to achieve the challenging task of energy efficiency and conservation in all sectors of economy, a need was felt to introduce credible law which has now been provided through the National Energy Efficiency and Conservation Act 2016 recently passed by the National Assembly and the Senate and as notified in the gazette in July 2016. The Act shall provide for the establishment of institutions and enunciation of mechanisms and procedures so as to provide for effective conservation and efficient use of energy in all sectors of the economy.
Alternate Energy Development Board
Alternative Energy Development Board (AEDB) is the sole representing agency of the Federal Government that was established in May 2003 with the main objective to facilitate, promote and encourage development of Renewable Energy in Pakistan and with a mission to introduce Alternative and Renewable Energies (AREs) at an accelerated rate. The administrative control of AEDB was transferred to Ministry of Water and Power in 2006.
Pakistan Council of Renewable Energy Technologies
Pakistan Council of Renewable Energy Technologies (PCRET) was established by merging the National Institute of Silicon Technology (NIST) and the Pakistan Council for Appropriate Technologies (PCAT) on May 8, 2001. It is the prime institution in the country for coordinating R&D and promotional activities in different renewable energy technologies.
National Electric power Regulatory Authority
NEPRA will regulate the electric power sector to promote a competitive structure for the industry and to ensure the co-ordinated, reliable and adequate supply of electric power in the future. By law, NEPRA is mandated to ensure that the interests of the investor and the customer are protected through judicious decisions based on transparent commercial principals and that the sector moves towards a competitive environment.
Pakistan Water and Power Development Authority
Pakistan Water and Power Development Authority (WAPDA) was established through an Act of Parliament in 1958. It is an autonomous and statutory body under the administrative control of the Federal Government. The Authority consists of a Chairman and three Members (Water, Power and Finance). Wapda was unbundled in the year 2007 whereby the functions of its Power wing were redefined as Hydel Power Generation and Operation & Maintenance (O&M) of power houses. Following unbundling of its power wing, WAPDA’s mandate is now development of water and hydropower resources in an efficient manner.
Pakistan Atomic Energy Commission
The Pakistan Atomic Energy Commission is an independent governmental authority and a scientific research institution, concerned with research and development of nuclear power, promotion of nuclear science, energy conservation and the peaceful usage of nuclear technology. Since its establishment in 1956, the PAEC has overseen the extensive development of nuclear infrastructure to support the economical uplift of Pakistan by founding institutions that focus on development on food irradiation and on nuclear medicine radiation therapy for cancer treatment.
